INTER CLOSE GAP ON TOP TWO

Italian Serie A champions Inter Milan have closed the gap on the top two teams on the league standings after they secured an away win over newly promoted side Venezia. Inter Milan started the weekend in third spot and with a four-point deficit to the top two teams namely Napoli and AC Milan. Napoli are at the Italian Serie A summit on goal difference from AC Milan with the two teams on 32 points apiece. The Nerazzuri were on 28 points before they faced home team Venezia in their latest league game.

Inter Milan went into the Venezia game knowing that they would play Champions League knockout stage for the first time in many years. They were able to record the win that moved them within one point of Napoli and Milan.

Turkish international HakanCalhanoglu has been in very good form since moving across town to sign for the Nerazzuri. Inter Milan won the race to sign him on a free transfer after his contract with San Siro rivals AC Milan finished at the end of last season.

Calhanoglu was responsible for the first Inter Milan goal on 26 minutes as he continued his good form in front of goal. The ex-Bayer Leverkusen star was able to score for the third league game running to establish a slender 1-0 lead over Venezia at the half-time interval. The Turkish midfielder has now scored four league goals in 12 Inter Milan games this season.  He managed the same four league goals in 33 appearances for AC Milan last season.

Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez wrapped up the win for Inter Milan from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time after he was brought down by Ridgeciano Haps.

Inter Milan are now one point off Milan and Napoli. The two teams can restore their four-point lead over the Nerazzuri if they win their respective league games on Sunday. Napoli and Milan have home games against Lazio and Sassuolo on Sunday respectively.
