Inter Began New Season With Disappointing Results

Inter Milan began their new season with yet another disappointing result after a 0-0 draw with Torino. Under pressure manager Walter Mazzarri signed a new contract extension during the off-season, which raised a lot of eyebrows given that the former Napoli manager oversaw a terrible finish to the campaign. After signing players like Nemanja Vidic over the course of the summer, there were reasons to be confident about Inter Milan returning back to the top three of the Italian Serie A. However, the season began in poor fashion after Inter failed to convert their chances and draw the match against Torino.

There was even a danger of the home team taking the lead in the match but Inter’s goalkeeper Samir Handanovic made an excellent save from the penalty taken by Marcelo Larrondo. A goal for Torino would have changed the landscape of the match and it would have also raised doubts about Mazzarri’s future as the Inter manager. It has been a few years since the club were last seen in the Champions League. Without the £ 30 million+ revenue from this competition, Inter may not be able to sustain having top players like Vidic in their ranks.

Mazzarri will be hoping to get the team to their first win of the season when they host Sassuolo at the San Siro after the international break. “It was a balanced and difficult game, which we knew it was going to be, as it’s never easy to play in Turin where they sit back and wait for you. We tried to win right to the end, but didn’t take our chances. Gary Medel was making his debut and did very well. Overall we played well and it’ll be tough for everyone here,” said the former Napoli boss, who has also expressed his interest to bring in a few players on deadline day.

INTER SET FOR VIDIC

Shelling out an approximate 20 million pounds, Inter Milan is all set to bag the ace centre, Nemanja Vidic. The international footballer from Serbia is being welcomed by San Siro, for a three year stretch contact which is costing Inter Milan 20 million dollars. Vidic’s contract with Old Trafford was expiring this summer as he signs his new deal.

This thirty two year old centre back is expected to earn 6 million pounds a year with Seria A, now that the £20m has been put on table. With him gone from Old Trafford, Man United boss David Moyes will need to work hard to find a replacement for Vidic.

Manchester United got Vidic way back in 2006 with 7 million pounds from Spartak Moscow. It is quite likely that along with his departure, Moyes may also face with the loss of talent in the form of Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand from the team.

Defender Patrice Evra has been reported to be in conversation with Piero Ausilion, Inter Mialn’s sporting director this week in London and might leave Old Trafford along with Nemanja Vidic, end of this summer. The thirty two year old defender’s contract with Manchester United ends in 30th June this year post which he will be made available for auction in the typical Bosman style transfer.

Meanwhile, ex Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho seems to be all set to be back to the club if Roman Abramovich chooses to let him go from Chelsea. He comments that at the moment he is pretty happy to be with Chelsea, but there is a good chance that in the forthcoming time Abramovich might decide to let him go. If that happens he will chose none but Inter among all Italian clubs.

STRUGGLING

Inter Milan’s latest victory in the Serie A was during their match against Ac.Milan as they played on December 22 and from there on out they have only been able on getting negative results. Suffering losses against Lazio and Udinese as well as having to settle to a 1-1 draw against Chievo Verona.

Even though it’s expected that the new owner of the club Erick Thohir will start investing on the club with fresh signings, the Indonesian billionaire has already stated that in order for him to sign new players into the team they will have to offload some of their own before bringing in new ones.

Fredy Guarin is considered to be one of the best midfielders that Inter Milan has to offer at the moment but the Colombian player is being heavily linked with a move away from the Italian club as many other top European clubs are interested in signing him.

The midfield and defence zone of Inter Milan have been the most critized in this season with Jonathan and Yuto Nagatomo are proving their worth at the wing back positions but the same cannot be said for Ranocchia and Juan Jesus who have hit rough patches and cannot seem to understand the schemes that Walter Mazzarri is trying to implement in Inter Milan.

Moving up into the midfielders, Esteban Cambiasso is nearing the end of his career and a replacement would be a wise decision for them to make. Daniele de Rossi is easily one of the best defensive midfielders in the Serie A and a substantial offer from Erick Thohir can tempt As.Roma on selling the Italian midfielder.

When Erick Thohir was questioned about the recent struggles that Inter Milan was going through he responded by saying that the club is entering a ‘’period of transition’’

“We are now entering a period of transition,” Thohir said.

“Ideally, the average player should be aged between 24 and 26 years. This does not mean that the heroes of the 2010 treble are not appreciated, but it is clear that even younger players must be incorporated into the squad.

THOHIR TAKES OVER

Erick Thohir was elected as the new president of Inter Milan as he replaces Massimo Moratti who will now become the honorary chairman.

“I really want to thank my friend and new partner Massimo Moratti for the trust and support, and thank also my partners Rosan and Handy, who I’ve known for more than 20 years; I want also to thank our families. Most of all, thanks to our supporters all around the world and wherever I met them, on Twitter or personally,” said Thohir.

“This is a truly special day in my life. Inter is a magnificent story of passion, a tradition of winning and commitment to excellence.

Ever since the arrival of Antonio Valencia to Manchester United, Luis Nani has slowly been losing his place in the English club. It has now come to the point that Nani is spending more time in the sidelines than in the main team.

This has attracted the attention of Juventus and Inter Milan as they are interested in signing the Portuguese winger. New Inter owner Erick Thohir is looking to make an impact in Milan and signing a player of Nani’s calibre is exactly what the Indonesian businessman has in mind.

Juventus and Inter Milan are not only competing against each other in Serie A and fighting for Luis Nani but both are also in the pursuit of signing the Aleksandar Kolarov from Manchester City.

Aleksandar Kolarov signed for Manchester City back in 2010 as he made his move from Lazio into the English side.

The 28 years old Serbian defender used to be a 1st choice player for the defence of Manchester City but things are now taking a turn as Gael Clichy is taking his role as the preferred option of Manuel Pellegrini. This gives Juventus and Inter Milan the opportunity to make an offer for the former Lazio player.

GREAT START

Inter Milan had made a fantastic start to the season and the dressing room cannot be more united than it is now according to midfielder Esteban Cambiasso. After the arrival of new manager Walter Mazzarri, they were expected to take some time to get into the groove. However, it has been a great start by the team, who will not be involved in any form of European football this season. Since taking over from Andrea Stramaccioni in the summer, Mazzarri has been able to get Inter to four victories and a draw in the opening five matches. As a result, they are currently second in the table only behind Roma.

They continued their winning run after a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in which Cambiasso was one of the scorers. Inter were coming on the back of a spectacular 7-0 win over Sassuolo. After a goalless first half, Italian international Giuseppe Rossi opened the scoring for Fiorentina in the 60th minute through a penalty. Inter were heading for the first defeat of the season before Cambiasso came to the rescue of the team with the equaliser in the 72nd minute. Inter soon found the winning goal in the 83rd minute through Jonathan.

They managed to sustain the position to get three more points, but Mazzarri will want to maintain this good form when they take on Cagliari next weekend.

“You can see that Inter have an identity once more and if that is accompanied by results too then it’s even better. We had a great reaction to going behind. The team is united and the fans can go home happy. Fiorentina really pressured us in the first half, but we knew they couldn’t keep that tempo up and struck at the right moment,” said Cambiasso after the match against Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A.

MAZZARRI SATISFIED

Inter Milan’s new manager Walter Mazzarri has said that he is extremely satisfied with what he has been seeing in the pre-season friendly matches so far. Mazzarri was recently appointed as the replacement for Andrea Stramaccioni, who paid a huge price for the club finishing in the 10th position last season. The former youth team coach was sacked by the club, and the former Napoli manager has been installed in his place. Immediately after taking over, Mazzarri said that he does not want people to have any expectations from him.

Many expected Inter to once again start challenging for the title, but Mazzarri has said that he has a huge rebuilding job on his hands. The club has already made some important signings in several areas of the pitch. This has worked to the benefit of the team after they have been in a decent run of form throughout the pre-season. After the recent 1-1 draw with German club Hamburg, Mazzarri has said that he is pleased with the performance of his players so far. However, returning back into the top three positions in the league is going to be extremely difficult for the club.

There are several clubs far stronger than Inter Milan like Napoli, Fiorentina, and Roma.

“In all honesty, it went better than expected. I am happy with the way this group is growing. Obviously there were a few hiccups that we will correct, but if we continue like this then I am happy with our daily progress. At this time the result is worth only a certain amount, as the important thing was the strong performance, which was not easy in the circumstances, as Hamburg cut in from the wings and push forward with four players,” said Mazzarri.

The club will be facing Chelsea in the next match.

STILL A LOT TO OFFER

The skipper of Inter Milan, Javier Zanetti, has said that he still has a lot to offer and he will come back after recovering from his Achilles injury.

Zanetti is 39 years of age at the moment. He has featured for Internazionale in more than 800 matches. He has also played close to 150 games for his country Argentina.

Recently, he injured his Achilles tendon while playing for Internazionale in the match against Palermo. The injury was severe and he went through surgery just a couple of days back. It will take him at least 6 months to get back to complete fitness.

Considering his age, people are saying that it will be very hard for Zanetti to comeback from this setback and he might announce his retirement in the near future. But, the Argentinean defender has denied all those rumours and has assured his fans that he is not going to retire.

After Zanetti’s surgery, the doctor Mr. Franco Benazzo said that the operation went smoothly.

When asked if Zanetti was calm during the surgery, Benazzo said, “Off course, he was. He is a man with terrific temperament. He remains calm and collected on the ground and he was the same in the theatre.”

“The operation went well. It went for almost an hour or so and we tried to do our best.”

“Javier will be on the bed for the next 20 days, after that, he will begin walking. To get completely fit, he needs at least half a year.”

Zanetti also talked to an Argentinean news channel after the operation. The Internazionale skipper said, “It’s not the end of my career. I will come back after recovery. I want to play in Internazionale shirt again.”

“I have been told by the doctors that it will take me 6-8 months to get back on park and I am ready to go through this period patiently.”

INTER FALL BACK

After appearing to come closer towards challenging the title in the middle of the campaign, Inter Milan have once again fallen behind the major clubs in Italy. The manager Andrea Stramaccioni has overseen the recent poor run of form, which has seen the club drop into the fifth position. Even though the possibility of finishing in the Champions League places still remains for the club, it has been a disappointing season nonetheless. Instead of coming out with excuses for the poor form, Stramaccioni has said that he would like to take the blame for the club’s inability to win matches recently.

The pressure on the manager mounted after they lost 3-1 at the hands of the relegation threatened Siena during the weekend. This defeat means that Inter Milan have not managed a single victory in the last four matches. As a result, their arch rivals AC Milan have been able to overtake them on goal difference in the table. One of the reasons for Inter Milan slumping to the defeat was the red card given to the defender Cristian Chivu, but the manager refused to blame this incident for the defeat. However, he still believes that the club will be able to finish in the top three at the end of the season.

“It is without doubt an ugly defeat and we are very angry. We had a few players missing but there are no alibis for a poor performance. Despite the fact we lost, we are still only three points away from the Champions League places, so we cannot give up and have to keep fighting. We can still achieve our objective but must find ourselves again, as we are still the team who in November were a point off the leaders and had great ambition,” said the 37-year-old.

DESERVED BETTER

Inter Milan were not deserving of the 3-0 defeat suffered at the hands of Udinese according to the manager of the Milan club Andrea Stramaccioni. The manager has been able to revitalise Inter Milan in a number of ways, but he was unable to prevent from the team slipping to a 3-0 defeat against Udinese. This defeat almost ends any hope of Inter Milan winning the title this season because they have fallen main points behind the leaders Juventus, who have a game in hand. Hence, the gap could be potentially be as large as 12 points by the end of this weekend.

Even though the score reveals an extremely hard match for Inter Milan, they were certainly in with a chance of winning the match until the red card for Juan. The player was sent off after the 65st minute, while Udinese had taken the lead a few minutes earlier through Di Natale. Inter also conceded two goals in the space of 4 min to give the flattening scoreline for Udinese. Stramaccioni has blamed the refereeing decisions in the match by saying that it has once again cost them valuable points. As a result of this defeat, Inter Milan have fallen to the fifth position in the table.

“We had a good first half and the 3-0 result is unfair and does not reflect the real game. Up until the Juan Jesus red card, it was a totally different match. We certainly aren’t fortunate when it comes to refereeing decisions, as once again today there was an incident. Palacio is a very fair player and he should not have been booked for simulation. Maurizio Domizzi put his hand on his neck and unbalanced him, so for me that is a penalty and a red card,” said Stramaccioni after the Udinese match.

FULL OF POTENTIAL

The Inter Milan manager Andrea Stramaccioni has said that he wants his team to realise the full potential and beat the lower opposition as they do against the top teams. Andrea Stramaccioni has been able to get the best out of Inter Milan this season, as he has been able to get the new look team to a position where they are able to challenge for the title with Juventus and Napoli. One of the main reasons for this has been the matches against Juventus and Fiorentina, which have been uncomfortably by Inter Milan despite being the underdogs.

However, they have struggled against lower opposition in the recent times, as the defeats against Parma, Atlanta, and Cagliari show the manager. He has said that the results against Juventus and Fiorentina clearly show that there is a lot of potential within the team, but they need to replicate that in the matches against lower opposition as well if they are to reach the heights of the previous Inter Milan teams. Inter Milan go into the weekend’s match against Palermo on the back of the 1-0 defeat against Parma. Stramaccioni has said that this period of a few days has given him the opportunity to fine-tune his team ahead of this encounter. Parma had just won two matches in the last five prior to this Inter Milan encounter.

“Inter Milan has defeated the best two teams of this league, that is Juventus and Fiorentina, producing two great performances. This has given us the awareness of our potential. We have defeated the league leaders and the team which is said to be playing the best football in Serie A and this has given us confidence. But we have lost points against the smaller teams,” Stramaccioni said ahead of the Palermo encounter on Sunday.
