Lionel Scaloni explains reason behind Mauro Icardi’s snub for Copa America

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has indicated that the recent omission of Mauro Icardi from the Copa America squad has nothing to do with his recent situation at Inter Milan. The marksman endured a difficult second half to the season with Inter where he was stripped from the captaincy and he thereafter refused to play for a brief period before making a comeback.

Speaking in a press conference, Scaloni said that the striker’s antics at the Nerazzurri did not play a part in the selection process but rather the decision was made based on the performance of the players in the national team pool. He said: “Seeing as there’s such a big pool of top players to choose from, it’s normal that there are doubts. Keeping everyone happy is difficult, especially for a national team.

Inter Milan defender has no plans to pursue a fresh challenge

Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar has indicated that he has no immediate plans of leaving the San Siro side. The Slovakian only joined the Nerazzurri from Sampdoria 18 months ago but he has put in a string of top class performances which have attracted high-profile interest from the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona.

Speaking to Sky Italia, the centre-back was asked about the current situation at the Nerazzurri and he replied saying: “Like all players I want to win something. That’s because players are remembered for what they won. For many players, the dream is to win the Champions League and the same goes for me. I must start slowly because I haven’t won anything yet so I have to start by winning something. Of course, winning the Champions League with Inter would be even better. Hamsik played at Napoli for 12 years. If I do that with Inter then I’ll certainly be happy.”

Croatian agent confident Ivan Perisic will stay with Inter Milan

Reputed Croatian agent Marko Naletilic has backed Ivan Perisic to remain at Inter Milan beyond the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old was one of the standout performers for Croatia during their runner-up finish at the World Cup and he has since been linked with a probable move to Manchester United.

However, agent Naletilic does not believe the Nerazzurri will sanction his departure and the attacker could be further motivated by the potential signing of compatriot Luka Modric from Real Madrid, he said: “I do not think Perisic will go away from Inter. Luciano Spalletti appreciates him a lot. With Mauro Icardi he is the most important player on the team and I am sure that he will remain. The arrival of Luka Modric would be added motivation for him to stay also.”
