Inter Milan appeared certain to end their league title drought

Inter Milan appeared certain to end their league title drought that has been plaguing the club for the last few years. Since the departure of Jose Mourinho in 2010, the team has gone through several stages of decline and are now even struggling to qualify for the Champions League.

This led to the appointment of their former manager Roberto Mancini after the club recently underwent a change in ownership. Inter Milan president Erick Thohir wanted to bring some sanity to the club by going to the tried and trusted manager. Even though last season did not result in a league title, it was a step in the right direction for the Italian manager.

This convincedThohir to hand a substantial transfer kitty to the manager in the summer. Things looked extremely promising at the start after Inter Milan took full advantage of the troubles faced by Juventus to lead the table. It looks like the title race was going to be between Inter Milan and the likes of Napoli, Roma, and Fiorentina. However, a change in scenery over the last few weeks now sees the club slip into third in the table. Three wins in the last five matches has seen Juventus move level on points. Italian clubs are quick to change their managers, butThohir has issued a vote of confidence to Mancini.

“He [Mancini] is a good coach and he will remain in charge next season. Our goal remains qualifying for the Champions League. It is just the media and fans who are talking about the Scudetto. I don’t think we should panic.Sunday’s match left us speechless, but this is football. We attacked constantly but the ball refused to go into the net.I hope Mancini and the players respond immediately against Atalanta,” said Thohir after the loss against Sassuolo.
